I hope I'm posting this in the right spot. So, for any of you that've noticed me lurking on Equus-sims or read my introduction post, you'll know I'm new to the scene and have a lot of questions. I apologize in advance if some are ignorant -- I just bought the game last week or so. So... read on at your own risk. c: How does breeding (to a sire/dam outside of someone's herd) generally work?
When you purchase a foal, do they maintain their pedigree in-game?
How many pets can you own by default in the game?
How, exactly, do in-game genetics work? I've noticed some horse pages say a mare will throw gray foals, but I've read (and observed) that Sims 3 foals take traits from both the sire and dam. Do you recolor them to be more appropriate/realistic?
Do you guys follow naming rules?
Are shows basically screen-shot contest?
If so, are most shows based in Appaloosa Plains?

Hey Erin! Glad you joined this community! Unfortunately foals do not keep their pedigree when tranferred onto another computer. The default number of pets is 6 But you can use a mod to have literally as many as possible. The in-game genetics aren't the best imo. Let's say the dam is a gray and the sire is a chestnut, you will usually have the two just mixed together with weird spots and stuff all over, I tend to keep the base color of the horse and then the markings if they aren't out of this world ofc

Generally, people tend to copy and paste our rules for some of our services, so I'm just going to do that here to give you an idea of the breeding procedure "To book a breeding with one of LEC's stallions, simply fill out the below Stud Request application and email it to admin@equus-sims.com. Once accepted, email us a copy of your mare's file (.sim or sims3pack), and we will have her bred to your desired stud - the mare and foal (together) will be returned to you once the foal has been born. The LEC retains the rights to photograph your mare and new foal, but we assure you, we will not retain a copy of your mare or foal once they are safely in your possession."

Regarding genetics, Rachel and I are working together on a new genetics program. It will involve working out your horse's genetics and you will be able to download an xls sheet that will determine foal genetics based on its parent's genes. Bc as Elin said..the in-game genetics suck. For now, until our page is up, we simply edit out blemishes in foals.

Naming rules are up to the seller. Mostly, people instruct buyers to carry on their stable name. You can read more about this at our site under Serves - Sales.
Shows are basically screen-shot based, yes. There havent been too many shows, but as far as I know, none have been limited to Appaloosa Plains. Some people will provide you with a specific lot to use, but I think they can be placed in any hood. It's kind of subjective to the host, though!

Thanks for all the answers guys. What kind of mods are there to edit things? Er, is there a site that explains how it works?

Check out Morning Star Equestrian. She's got a section up for how to use mods

To edit my foals, I use Twallan's Master Controller. Using its menu (click on the horse, select NRaas -> Master Controller -> Advanced -> Edit in CAS), you can go right into Create-A-Household and edit the foal, then press save, and voilĂ ! Pretty, unblemished foals!
